Home-built NAS experiences?

I am thinking of building my own NAS. I've seen several online discussions of this, and I've always built my own main home PCs, including adding a RAID card (currently I have two - an old 3Ware card that is now EOL and a newer Broadcom MegaRAID) and disks. But what I 'm looking for is some real-world people using a home-built NAS successfully, not just someone who did it for fun.

Just so you know, I have experience in Linux, various Unix flavors, and information security, so I don't anticipate problems with the Linux-based NAS software I've seen so far.

I feel the commercial NAS offerings I've seen are overpriced for what they offer, and this combined with their poor security record make me shy of them.
