Calibrating printer without calibration kit... possible?

So I have the i1 Profiler from X-Rite, but only have the version that can do screens.  I was wondering if there is a way (not with the X-Rite necessarily) to calibrate my printer for better prints, or do I have to get a profiler made for calibrating printers?  I will not be printing a lot, mainly for personal use (any large jobs or purchased prints I have a lab take care of for me, which is why I don't really want to invest in a profiler for the printer, unless it's $100 or less).
