Which aperture as a good starting point?

Which aperture is (as a starting point) optimal when shooting with my new Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD (on a Nikon D3500 / 5300)? How do I get the sharpest images? I am aware that there are many attitudes to this, but I am looking for a good starting point (aperture range).
