EU and UK law forces retailers to accept 14 day returns for most products bought remotely for any reason.

And obviously much longer periods for faulty goods regardless of any guarantee that the manufacturer offers. Typically 2 years for electrical items though it varies according to product type.

The 14 day return period is seen as the retail equivalent of the cooling off period that is offered for financial products like insurance which I think is 14 days also.

In the clothing/fashion world it is common for people to buy products in multiple sizes and returns the ones that don't fit. Retailers build this in to their costs and most still offer free returns. Some charge for delivery to deter the "unreasonable" customers who regularly buy on impulse (often fuelled by alcohol and and apps on phones) and return everything they bought later.

Most purchasers behave reasonably though and retailers manage to make a living.
