Red dot sight mounting on PL100-400

My EE 1 red dot sight arrives tomorrow. Today in our park I notice that many of the 'big lens birders' had their red dot sights mounted on their lenses instead of on the body, with a clamped circular ring in front of the tripod bracket which held the mounting bracket. Talking to them they say that this means that they can use it much more accurately (as well as getting it out of the way of their hats)

Has anyone any experience of mounting one this way, it would be difficult on my PL100-400 as the tripod clamp screw gets in the way, but if it is worthwhile I can try.

I am looking forward to being able to get a higher hit rate of BIF with the sight I find it very hard to use 400mm and position the focus spot (box) reliably without it.

Any comments or ideas would be gratefully received

tom
