D5 x Z7 - Jim Kasson's high ISO RAWs with PL5

Jim uploaded a few RAWs from D5 and Z7 covering 6400 and higher ISOs, they are available via an email message to him:

He redid them:

I used the 6,400 base exposure and the 25,600 (6,400 -2 stops) files from the second set uploaded, which showed an even plane of focus for both cameras.

Then I ran them under PL5. I'll start here with a simple remark re WB. The recorded values were different, and that may impact the perception of both noise and DR. The recorded values (D5 always on left):

I used the flat area to left and above the boat and, with 20pix wide WB pin tool, matched the WB to a somewhat midway between the above, which I used from then on:

Not exactly same but closer. This image uses no correction, all lens corrections and detail, NR, color enhancement, USM, etc, except for WB, were turned off, so that one can see how noise is rendered from both cameras at 6400 by PL5. I opened them also in NX studio, not much difference visually. I see slightly more noise grain from Z7, but it is better defined, more to my tate for printing. There is some smearing on the D5's grain, and I have seen this in all samples available publicly, with various converters, so it's really a property of the D5 sensor/ADC, maybe some filtering?

Next, I checked the darker area on the bottom right, to see if I could see any difference in DR.

I looked and looked but, honestly, not much to talk about. Still some better detail from Z7, also more noise, but much similar otherwise. I'll redo these crops using NR in the next post, maybe one of them will clean up better.
