Need moon-shot advice

Hi all!

I'm hoping someone out there can help me accomplish a shot I've been trying to get but I'm falling short every time.

In my area we frequently get fog and haze, often causing a colorful cloud halo around the moon, especially when it's first rising. (Not cloud cover, of course, but wispy clouds that allow the moonlight to shine through).

What I'm trying to do is get the moon (full)  with the halo and it's surrounding colors, but here's what always happens:

If I shoot to accommodate the moon, I get a crisp moon with a jet black background. But if I open it up to try to accommodate the cloud cover, I just get a big white blob with motion blur, and the white nulls any colors around it.

There's got to be a way to do this - can anybody throw out some tips?

Thanks a bunch!

(Using a Nikon D7100 and 300mm lens).
