R5 - using VF only, how to shoot with LCD panel closed?

I shoot using the VF only and have no use for the LCD. So, when I close the LCD panel (so that the LCD glass faces the camera), the VF focus square moves and sticks into a corner of the VF screen - and I can't move it. When I open the LCD panel and flip it so that the LCD glass faces me, the VF focus square is fully moveable via the joystick or dials.

Am I missing a setting to resolve this?

Bottom Line: I want to shoot with the LCD panel closed, LCD glass facing the camera. When closed, I want to not have the focus point stuck in a VF corner.

Anyone have suggestions, please?

An interesting problem. It doesn’t happen with mine - if I close the screen, the focus point remains where it was, I can move it around using the joystick, and also re-centre it by pressing the joystick. Just wondering - is there anything causing pressure on the screen when you close it? Have you for example fitted a glass screen protector? another possibility might be some break or short circuit in the cable connecting the LCD screen to the camera, that only happens when you close the screen (which involves a twist). Hope you solve it or get it fixed.

For me on my R6 the focus point would move to the top left corner. What I found was I was touching the screen when I turned it to face in. So I have been using a fast press on the joystick and its back to center.

Good luck

There is another thread where a similiar problem is described: After closing and opening the screen the square sometimes is sitting in a corner even if the screen has not been touched.

As Davel33 said, you can press in on the center of the joystick to return it to center. You can also disable the touch screen AF Point feature in the menu to prevent it from happening in the future.

I quite often have the screen turned in without any problems. And I have a glass screen protector on it which meant it's more likely to touch something when folded in.

Because this issue does have a bit of an extension to it I disabled the ViewFinder Sensor long ago. The old OVF was nice because when you lifted it to the eye you could start tracking right away.

Even you press a button (I use the shutter) to wake the R5 up before you get it to your eye the LCD wakes up first. There is still a delay after the sensor detects your eye and flips from the LCD to the EVF.

I set the AF point selection button to toggle manually between the LCD and EVF. Sometimes if there is a lot of action I delay the camera powering down so the EVF is always active.

Hi Steve,

That shouldn’t happen. (Your R5 should operate normally with the screen closed).

Firstly, for information, the (SET) button is the default button to centre the AF Point.

Secondly, have you enabled the joystick to move the AF points? (For some bizarre reason the joystick has no function assigned to it by default).

Usually, I’d suspect you’re touching the screen as you close it and, as others have suggested, would advise you to try disabling ‘Touch to focus’. But that wouldn’t explain why you can’t move the AF point once the screen is closed - unless it’s the joystick function thing.

In your EVF menus, you can programme the screen to be always off, until you press a button to turn it on

Happens all the time with my R6... AF point button + joystick press centers and allows joystick control again. Sometimes joystick press alone doesn't work, but preceding that with AF point always work for me.

Try disabling touch and drag AF in the menus, then turn the screen around.

Yeah, but I switch back and forth frequently with EVF/BBF for normal shooting and touch and drag AF for low POV for indoor sports. accessing the menu regularly is a non-starter for me, especially when two button presses with at at EVF is so quick.

I had a somewhat similar issue - closing the LCD panel moved the focus point to the upper left hand corner. However, I could easily change it's location via the joystick. In your case, you are saying the focus point is "frozen". That IS odd. For what it's worth, here's is my earlier thread - it may be of some help. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4620906
