The Z6II gives greater performance than the D5.

On a test chart, perhaps. In real life, absolutely not.

Not just one test chart, in any comparison I have seen using identical exposure. The Z6II addressed the issue of banding when raising shadows that the Z6 had. Any shortfall in image quality would be down to issues in your raw processor.

Seen or created? Have you done the work or simply viewed the work done by others?

Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to see a well controlled test evaluating the situations I face, but I've never seen one!

Unless your use case is to deliberately underexpose when shooting with the Z6II - which would be unfair - studio comparisons are perfectly accurate.

In an earlier post, I showed images taken from DPreview's ISO-invariance comparison tool where I significantly increased the brightness - the D5 had noticeable worse noise in dark regions. You could also look at the studio scene comparison tool, or exposure latitude tool to compare.

If you find DPreview's images insufficient, perhaps try Imaging Resource? There you can see despite Nikon's tweaks to noise reduction for JPEGs, the noise and detail remains similar between the D5 and Z6II.
