What am I doing wrong if anything?

What am I doing wrong if anything? I took a picture of a guy teaching kids on a trapeze today and it was very bright and a bit backlit as you can see but I often find that I’m getting these really blacked out pictures using matrix metering. Do I just need to look at my histogram and exposed to the right more or try to bring stuff up in processing more. On evenly lit or semi shady pictures a nail it put on these right hand high contrast things I’m doing something wrong. Would spot metering help If I was only going to shoot jpegs and didn’t really want to process. Thanks in advance
