It sounds like you have the camera and you can get the lens, so give it a try.  You will need to practice, and a monopod will certainly help.    I keep a T3i at a second home along with an EF 70-300 Mark II (this is the more higher end version of the 70-300) and have gotten reasonably good results even when compared to the 7D Mark II and R6 using L series glass.

I think it is important to figure out what you can get with the equipment you have through practice and experimentation.  That is the only way you can really determine if you need to upgrade.

I've invested a lot in equipment but only after I was determined through practice that I could not get the results I wanted with what I already had.
