They have resolution details and size at 300ppi and 150 ppi for every image. Would be surprising if they dont use corresponding dpi if the size is within those limits ?
That's not near enough to hold detail in those images. Heck, compared to a silver gelatin 8x10 contact print a 300 ppi print of the same size is fuzzy.
Yes this doesn't make much sense to me. All that effort to produce a huge file that they go on to print at 150 or 300ppi? I'm also wondering why create a file from 40-50 exposures using a DSLR and lens at f/16. Difficult to know how questionable that approach is without knowing more about the lens, but I would have thought detail would be limited by diffraction.
I saw some work by a German photographer a few years ago who shoots many thousands of frames of the same subject, using different focal lengths and even cameras over several years. Having seen the prints up close I'm confident they weren't printed at 300 ppi. The end result was worth the effort.
