Larry, did you try the M6 for astro previously? I'd like to know if it's worth looking out for a suitable lens.

Thanks

Rog

If you're referring to the M6 vs. the M6 Mark ii, I did previously own an M6 which was also good for astro. I upgraded to the M6ii hoping the higher resolution would give better results, and it definitely does --- the extra resolution does help both on deep sky and planetary photography where every pixel counts.

As for lenses, I found a vintage Minolta MC Celtic 135mm f2.8 to be very good even wide open:

But I found the Rokinon 135mm f2.0 lens I got this Black Friday to be even better wide open, it's really sharp across the frame:

I've tried a wide variety of vintage and modern lenses for constellation photography. I was hoping the Sigma 56mm f1.4 would be a good astro lens --- and it turns out to be good in the center but corners show coma. A vintage Minolta MD 50mm f2.0 lens actually does a little better at that focal length. The Canon 22mm f2 does a respectable job as does an adapted Nikon DX 35mm f1.8 G lens. I've ordered a refurb EF-M 32mm f1.4 lens and will try that next.

I also have a Meade ETX-90 telescope which turns out to be a great scope for use with the M6ii ---- very sharp and clear for its size. it's also very small and portable. Using the M6ii and processing single images in DxO Photolab gives excellent results:

Larry, many thanks for this comprehensive reply. I'm glad to hear you had previous success with the M6, it's the best I can afford for now. I have a nice sharp old PK fit Tokina 135 F/2.8 which I could try out with an adapter. I read your description of stacking and processing on another thread. So much to learn!
