Comparison of X100F digital teleconversion to X-T2 + 35mm f2

More and more I am using my X100V as my “go-to” and sometimes only camera, particularly for travel. With the ability to use the digital teleconverter while preserving the raw file (FW2+), I am able to frame portraits, etc. at a longer effective focal length FOV. In most cases I like the out of camera jpegs so much that only slight adjustments are needed, saving me a lot of time. Keep in mind this is for amateur, personal use only – I am not a pro. I know that there is some loss in the rescaling, and that I could crop and resize later in post to similar effect. But, I find it helps me to compose with the actual FOV I want.

I wanted compare the perspective and subject “separation” from the background between an actual 35mm lens (~50mm equiv FOV) and the “50mm” setting on the X100F. I used the X-T2 and the Fuji XF35mmf2 set at f2, and the X100F set at f2 with the digital conversion to 50mm equivalent as noted. All jpeg setting were the same, and I used the X100F in order to have the same sensor and processor for this test. I set the autofocus point the same in both cases, and only moved the camera slightly to get the same coverage in both shots, which mimics how I would frame in normal use.

No great surprise, but I find the results quite similar and frankly good enough for me, despite the limitations of the X100F lens at close focus. This makes feel better that I am not losing much of anything using the digital conversion on my X100V. The out of focus areas and rendering seem similar. BTW, the Christmas lights in the background are not round, but oval. Any other thoughts welcome, but I thought this might be useful for others considering the X100V or F.
