.. I understand that the Nikon 100-400 is a very good lens, but for occasional use it is too expensive. So I bought a used Sigma 100-400 for only 600 ,- As far as I have seen the Sigma is sharper @400 than the Nikon 80-400 G.

Do I need the Sigma dock? Are there any problems when the Sigma 100-400 is on a Z6?

The lens I bought new in 2019 (which coincidentally turned out to have the most recent firmware) works fine with my Z6, Z7 & DSLRs. I have an Art lens as well so I bought the dock anyway as there was a firmware update for the Art lens (for an occasional issue that made no difference to me 'as far as I could tell'!).

Glad I did buy the dock, however, as I could create custom settings (C1 & C2) for AF speed, distance limiter and OS settings, making for a slightly more versatile 100-400.

As for a used lens, there have been firmware updates for the 100-400 OS for Nikon since launch: If you can't tell which firmware is in your lens -- or you do know it's an earlier firmware -- you may want to get the dock as the firmware updates seem to have addressed criticisms found in early reviews of the lens. (slow AF & poor OS stability in the viewfinder IIRC) https://www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/c017_100_400_5_63/?tab=support&local=firmware
