Can’t get my D500 to shoot in burst mode

I posted I couldn’t use my D500 do to rain, then got really sick on Christmas Day (get Covid tested tomorrow).  I tried to shoot birds at my daughter’s feeders but no luck. Just couldn’t get shutter speed to work.
I have read everything I can think of and checked the menu settings but the camera just won’t shoot multiple continuous shots. Tried shutter priority and manual mode, etc.  Is there a setting I might be missing?
I did find two instances of it happening on my google search but there were no solutions.  I really hope it’s something simple.  I do have a warranty but hope that’s not needed.
I have af-c on. The lens is Nikon 70-300 VR 4.5-6.3 G ED. Thanks

“What day is it?” asked Pooh.
“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.
“My favorite day,” said Pooh.
