I think the "-" in the Built-in column means that the built-in flash is not capable of these functions. So the built-in cannot do FEB, zoom, or act as a wireless flash controller.

If you get the inexpensive 90EX to use as the wireless controller, you should be able to set it up in the [External flash func. setting] menu.

P.S. the 90EX cannot enable HSS in the remote slave 550EX. For that you'll need a controller unit capable of HSS.

Thank you for that.

I'm also looking at the Canon ST-E2 transmitter and the Pocket Wizards (FlexTT5 & MiniTT1).  My assessment as follows -

The 90EX is a flash in its own right, but with no obvious benefit vs. the pop-up flash other than acting as a transmitter.

The ST-E2 is specifically a transmitter, but without a flash.  So I wonder what functionality it adds over the 90EX.

The Pocket Wizards would be suited for outdoor use without line of sight.

None of the above support HSS, High-speed sync. - which I just learned what it is, thanks ;).  I suspect anything that does this is likely to fall well outside my price budget for now.
