Fading Comet Leonard with 56mm f1.4
1

Some astrophotography this evening with the sharp and fast Sigma 56mm f1.4 lens. capturing fading Comet Leonard from a city sky with the M6ii.

I was able to get an extreme dynamic range in a single M6ii image using DxO PhotoLab 5 by masking the brilliantly lit building using Control Points, and dropping its exposure 3 EV relative to the sky, then masking the sky and bringing it up 0.5 - 1 EV. Most of the detail was there in the RAW file, but you can see the brightest highlights are still blown out.

The comet appears to be about magnitude 6 judging by the stars in the photo. Not bad for the M6ii and DxO to be able to get the faintest thing visible to the human eye along with a brightly lit building, in a single frame! This is a single exposure, no stacking.

The arrow points to the comet; Venus in the upper right corner of the frame.

Comet Leonard over the Tampa Bay Hotel spires as seen from Curtis Hixon Park on the Tampa Riverwalk. Venus to the upper right. 6:37 PM 12/19/2021, Canon M6ii with Sigma 56mm f1.4 lens at f1.4, 1/6s, ISO 800
