I have both and I like them differently.

The 90 has fantastic rendering and is really fast and precise. The focal length is a too tight for most indoor purposes though. But wow, its output is great. The bokeh characteristics and sharpness roll-off are both excellent. I wish my 56 was more like this

The 56 is great too and more practical for indoor portraits. I don't like its focusing behaviour though, it hunts at undesired moments when you least expect it (e.g. dark venues with backlight are notorious).  It's rendering is a bit more messy than the 90, but we're splitting hairs here. The pictures do have some of that je ne sais quoi when you nail it.

The focal lengths makes them quite different beasts, the 90 really is into telelens territory with its compression and required shutter speeds. Plus, if thin DOF is your thing, the 90 is a better candidate too at certain distances, despite its f/2.
