Hi,
To give some background - I'm just getting into higher end cameras. I have an old brute 5D Mk III that I got on a great deal about 6 months ago. I've shot it enough to know that I crave higher quality photos now. I'm seriously considering getting the EOS R and pairing it with the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens which I could also use on the 5D as a backup. Versatility-wise I think the EOS R looks amazing. I did test a Sony A7iii just in case I wanted to even consider switching, but the pop out screen on the EOS R and the higher resolution of the R make me want to stick with Canon. My favorite stuff to do is street and landscape photography. I have no goals to do weddings/events, but getting better at portraits in a street sort of way is something I'm interested in getting better at as well. For me this is still more of a hobby than career, although, I do want to get to the point of being able to sell prints or possibly even publish a book someday.
My big question here is - Does anyone have experience with both these cameras (5D MkIII and EOS R)? Would you see it as a step in the right direction to move to the EOS R from the 5D?
Any input at this point is useful. I want to make sure I'm going to spend money wisely if at all.
Thanks!
I have used 5D MkIV (and i still have it). R is a nice camera, but R6 and R5 are the real next generation ... i bought R6 some 6 months ago and it still is amazing . R5 was too expensive and i did not need the 45 mp
IBIS and AF system will give you a totally new experience - and some images you could not take with 5D. Especially the new AF system is something that you will like after trying it (read the manual first )
Sigma24-70 will work with R6 and IBIS will work. Just buy the adapter that works surprisingly well with all lenses - i have used EF 24-70 f 4 and it is a nice lens with R6. Of course new RF lenses are very good - but the price is quite high. EF lenses just work
The AF system will be especially useful for street and possibly portraits (extremely fast face/eye detection and perfect focus - if you want it.
The sensor size might make you think if size matters ... i do not see real differences when i compare 5DMkIV and R6 - and i do print images up to A2 size - ok for even bigger prints . Images are clean without noise and the resolution is good enough for everything.

I started SLR film photography in 1968. Now two systems: Fujifilm X-H1 + X-E3 and Canon FF gear 5dMkIV + R6
