Devices conforming to the USB Power Delivery spec need to communicate. (Though I think they can fall back on 5V/1A?)

Which of course isn’t enough to power the M50 through the adapter.

C is just the physical connector, and what version of the spec communicates over it is determined by the device it's on and how it's wired up. Given that the item in question here is presumably a simple cheapish DC-DC booster, I would assume it probably expects just a dumb 5V/2A supply unless it explicitly has "Power Delivery" or "PD" in the name.

That’s also what the OP assumed, and it isn’t working for him.  I advise the OP to try an actual USB-C (yes PD) power supply first, before sending his unit back.  I own several different adapters (with the dummy batteries) and they’ve all worked fine.  Best to do one’s due diligence.
