Hello everybody.

I am searching for a good nd/cpl filter kit. Since my lenses will be different diameters (43mm, 49mm, 55mm and maybe even 67mm) I am trying to pick a nice set with holder + square filters (80x80 or bigger) or alternatively step up rings (43 to 67, 49 to 67 etc).

Are there any holders that support diameters as low as 43mm?

Any suggestions on kits, or standalone nd/cpl filters?

Thanks in advance.

Various filter types have their advantages and disadvantages.

I like to buy individual filters for my lenses so that I can still mount a standard lens hood (very important). But that gets expensive. I haven’t quite pulled the trigger on a CPL for my latest lens (just got the RF 28-70), and it has a monstrous 95mm $$$ filter thread!

My favorite filter is the “B+W XS-PRO Digital KSM HTC-POL MRC Nano” (CPL). I also have the “standard thickness” version of this too (for when vignetting isn’t a possibility). And I have a couple of the “Hoya Fusion Antistatic CIR-PL” that Marco really likes (they’re substantially less expensive).

When I need a Neutral Density filter, I try to use a CPL for this (when appropriate) since it can cut down a stop or so of light. Otherwise I’ll take off the CPL and just use an ND8 (3-stop) filter. Avoid stacking filters if at all possible. Those additional glass/air interfaces (esp since they’re flat) will degrade your IQ. Also, don’t over-tighten filters, as they can be a bear to take off (there are tricks to removing stuck filters).

BTW I only use a “protective” filter when I absolutely need to (blowing sand/spray). But if you’d like to mount one “permanently” for insurance, that’s up to the individual.

Using step-up rings is also a viable option (as long as there’s no mechanical vigetting).  Buy a screw-in hood for the filter.  Square filter sets work too (esp for graduated ND), but keep them shaded from the sun, like with a hat.

There’s some good info about filters in this previous thread…
