First off I suggest the inexpensive, but very good Canon 18-55 for up close shots. Since you are new, set the top dial to Portrait and shoot away. I would go with a ISO 400-800 if it allows you. Heck, go with Auto and if the flash is too much, turn it off (if possible while in Portrait). Raise your shutter speed to 1/800 or more. Check out some youtube videos and you will be quickly on your way to some very good images.
