Sigma 56mm DC DN C ISO 12,800 - 20,000 Night images

I bought the Sigma 56mm DC DN C in EOS M mount for my available-light night photography. It's my first Sigma lens since buying a 28mm f2.8 for a Yashica FX-2 back in the early 80s... Sigma has come a long ways since then.

I have seven nifty-fifty lenses including the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 ii lens, the sharpest of all those at f2 or wider is a Minolta MD iii 50mm f2. My fastest is a Minolta MC Rokkor-X 50mm f1.4 lens which is very sharp from f2.8 onwards but at f1.4 is quite soft with low contrast.

I'm very happy with the Sigma --- not only is it a beautiful lens which works perfectly on the M cameras, but it is razor sharp to the corners wide open with very little flare. The images of the train with its blinding headlight was like looking directly into the Sun!

Not only are the Sigma 56mm images sharper than anything I've gotten before from a ~50mm lens, but the f1.4 aperture plus DxO Deep prime let me keep the ISO in the <=20,000 range, which seems to be the extreme upper limit for the Canon M6ii without washing the shadows completely out.

All images below were shot at ISO 3200 in-camera, and pushed 2 to 2.67 EV using DxO PhotoLab 5, a technique borrowed from astrophotography to preserve a better dynamic range and the most detail at high ISOs.

With the image below, most of the train and the gravel in the foreground is almost in complete darkness. My previous attempts to shoot the train here with my other 50mm lenses all failed --- the ISO went so high that the little detail on the train cars washed out completely, and the track detail was also poor due to soft corners.
