Are online printing services to be avoided?

I've been looking around for recommendations of sites to use for good quality prints ("art" quality, if you will) and it's surprised me to find very few discussions about it. I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing something obvious. Is it more accessible than I realize to print high quality prints of display size on your own? Impossible to get good quality prints from an online service? Is there some other reason that everyone seems to be opting to own their own printer?

FWIW: I'm an enthusiastic hobbyist who's been invited to enter a handful of pieces in a show. I'd love to have some mountable prints in the 16"x24", 30"x20" range. Am I overreaching? I shoot on a Canon 7D Mk II, if that colors your advice.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
