Canon Flash with Nikon Z6

I used Canon 270EXII with canon bodies in the past but sold canon gear and this flash was just sitting there, so i thought i should try it with the Z6. The pins are different but it mounts perfectly fine. The flash fires with each shutter activation, so I guess the camera recognizes it. The only problem is images are way overexposed (compared to Nikon SB-400) and the flash compensation doesn't appear to make any difference. Also, the flash info is not shown in the exif data and when the canon flash goes to sleep while mounted on Z6, it won't wake up with the camera shutter button, you have turn the flash off and on by itself.

Has anyone else used canon flashes with nikon and is there a way to make the flash compensation work (other than using a diffuser)?

I kinda prefer the canon flash over nikon sb-400, if i can make it work.
