I was just thinking of the recent crop of 60MP + cameras that will be coming out soon (Leica fpL) alonng with the constant postponement of the FFF and it dawned on me is it possible that FFF will not be able to compete with these new high MP Bayer cameras, hence the reason for the delay and eventual scrapping of the project?
Leica fp L? Tell me more!
Sigma announced they scrapped the initial attempt at the FFF and restarted from scratch. They then introduce a 60 MP Bayer camera. Maybe after some in depth analysis, Sigma concluded that the Foveon advantage is no longer that big an advantage and the much more versatile 60M Bayer sensors have put the final nail in the coffin.
I agree with this. The "Foveon Advantage" is, to me, lack of interpolation, meaning single pixel detail far better than any interpolated sensor can deliver.
The 60mp Bayer image resized down to 30mp or so does almost as well, if not equally well, and with far better dynamic range than the Foveons we know and love.
Another supposed Foveon Advantage is the color rendering, which by most measures is not accurate but more artistic. I think Sigma put this into my fp L in the form of the oddball color modes such as classic Foveon yellow, a mode I basically use all the time.
So, what we have is Sigma Color Technology, built up by Sigma over the last 19 years of Foveon imaging, and now in the fp L enough Bayer resolution to duplicate a possible full frame foveon of 30mp.
I'm loving my fp L, and not worrying anymore about waiting for a full frame Foveon.
Don't you wish your fp L could capture grass and trees the way the Merrills can Tom?
