Sigma want (and need) to a be camera manufacturer, as well as a lens manufacturer, as this is what helps them to make even better lenses!

This seems to be well-understood by the current CEO and also was of course the wish of his father.

However, I am not sure that this requires them to produce their own sensor? In the old Foveon days that sensor was a good choice as it helped to differentiate their cameras and added value that was not available elsewhere.

But now with high-resolution full frame sensors available from other fabs the situation is really different.

One thing one shouldn't forget that Sigma cameras used to be of tremendous value - very high image quality at a really low cost. This was definitely true for the original DP cameras but also for the Merrill and Quattro compacts where you got excellent glass with a sensor that competed as combo with cameras costing 3x as much. Also the SD quattro kit was extremely affordable and of very high value.

Now with the fp / fp L series at least to me it seems the value proposition is gone. It seems to be a very good camera for what it is but it is not really as good value as all the other Sigma cameras that came before it. I suppose that's because of the large format sensor - probably the most expensive part of the camera? And I suppose the FFF sensor will definitely not be cheaper to make...

If one day the fp original + 45mm + EVF as a kit cost below 999 GPB I might jump
