Who will be the first to get the production Z9?

Well, it depends on what they can deliver with the firmware update. They delivered a statement with the Z9, but DSLR users are converting more and more, and need the bodies available at an affordable price. If the second gen bodies can’t get to a certain point quickly, they should make third gen bodies their top priority.
On second thought, dont think it will be Z67 iii with Expeed 7. Moving from Expeed 6 to 7 is a major move and thus it deserves its own model name and is not stuck with Z67.

Wonder in Nikon's past, have they introduced a major hardware improvement and stuck with an existing model family name?
Nikon has run out of room with name changes unless they start a three-digit convention. They put single digits in their higher-end models, two on DX (I know, only one so far but they have set precedent).

My hunch is they sat in a room five years ago and mapped out model names for quite some time. After exploring different schemes they hit on the model/gen they are using now, and they will stick with it for some time.

I think it is perfectly logical to make a Z6/7iii, Z5ii, and Z50ii and then continue the series as they down-line their processors.

i doubt these ship by air, except a very few for promo purchases. It costs too much, are shipping these by the pallet. I doubt the first batch for the US market will fill an entire container.

But just think about it. The first Z9s are on a freighter right now. Actually they may be sitting in the road stead at the port of Los Angeles waiting to be unloaded.
No way they are going on a container ship. No guarantee they get out of port. It’s not a big deal to ship pallets by airfreight.
Well, it is if you're the one paying the freight. I would guess a pallet of Z9's might be a pretty penny even if they only fit 50 to a pallet at say 5 lbs a box (probably going to be more than that). That going to the US at least very well could be $1000+ per pallet by air.

If anything, there will just be delay, like there is with other brands. I doubt Nikon is going to air freight them to other countries, except maybe directly to certain people (like NIkon Ambassadors who haven't received their production units yet perhaps).

It’s probably a mix: air freight when the conditions demand it otherwise by sea.

Will rename it Mark 3.

agree

Lucky man and first unboxing video ever, hope Nikon puts up a E-version of the Z9 manual online for punters to drool over.

I have a friend who is in the bulk shipping industry. He feels it is almost certain that Nikon is shipping the Z9 by air for the foreseeable future. Less expensive cameras and lenses may go the wet way, but higher value stuff probably flies.

I agree with the air route. Look at Alibaba, Amazon, etc, they use air and the cost is not that great.

Furthermore, instead of individual boxes, with a big order, Nikon can use air cargo container like AQ7 (no, I do not work in the cargo industry, just looked that up), one can put 19.9/0.01 = approximately1990 boxes of Z9 in there! Bulk cargo is cheaper than individual parcels.

I bet Nikon centers in major cities already have the brand new Z9s in their storerooms now and staffs are busy preparing the delivery consignment notes for the very lucky first group!

I wish ;-)
As the temporary Santa in 2021, I hereby grant you the wish!

Be the first! Explore, enjoy and be amazed at its powers!

Santa 2021
As long as it's not Santa 2022 ...
Santa Senior is taking his very first holiday. He wants to travel around the world with his Xmas gift from Nikon, a Z9!

I cannot guarantee it, I will drop a note in Santa dept on your Santa 2021 request.

Good luck!

Nikon may be trying to get all the Z9 to the local distributors at the same time to allow for a same day release / sales start date.

As for who gets them first NPS members could get them as an early release so that they have their Z9 in their hands on sales start date (rumor has it that is 15th Dec).

Everyone else the gets their shipped or picked up from 15th.

Who knows really however...
That's more or less how it worked with the original Z series launch. I had my Z7 a day or two before the street date, but that's because my shop got shipped the 'NPS' orders a day ahead of the normal first shipment. Some lenses were the same, think the largest delta I saw was maybe 72 hours ahead.

Probably same for Z9, we got a hat and letter saying we'll be among the first to experience the Z9. Any day now... hopefully? Still need some memory cards other than XQD... minor though.
