Focus acquisition - F4 lens

I was shooting at an event yesterday in dim lighting with my Z6, 24-70 F4 S lens and bounced flash. The photos were of people and the flash did a great job, but the camera was struggling to focus. I didn’t want to blind guests with the green focus light so I had that switched off. I was using BBF, single point focus and reframing. Face/eye recognition not possible.

So I'm wondering, is the focusing problem my F4 lens? And is this the main reason event photographers use the F2.8 24-70 lens?
