Z5 with M-mount lenses
1

Hello Folks,

I recently bought a Nikon Z5 + 40mm f/2 after almost a decade away from photography (in the form of a D90). I'm loving the camera, especially the ergonomics, and I imagine the 40mm will eventually be complemented by a few other primes (24mm, 28mm, 85mm).

A few days ago, I entered the rabbithole that is M-mount lenses and walked away convinced that I needed a Zeiss Planar 50mm f/2 ZM lens adapted to my new Z5. The lens and an Urth adapter are arriving on Monday.

Yesterday, I learned about the larger sensor stack heights of mirrorless cameras resulting in significant color shift or smearing in the corners, especially for wider angle lenses [1][2][3][4][5][6].

Then, I read about the separate issue of the Z5 using a standard CMOS sensor rather than a BSI CMOs sensor, the latter better accommodating M-mount lenses [7][8].

I also found a specific comment [9] on Zeiss ZM lenses not being ideal on Nikon Z cameras.

On the flip side, there are many other people who seem to be yielding great results with Z cameras and M-mount lenses [10][11][12].

Given these references, does anybody have any idea (or experience) on what I should expect with the Z5 + Zeiss Planar 50mm f/2 ZM combo?

I had also been looking to get either a Zeiss C Biogon 35mm f/2.8 ZM or a Voigtlander Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5 P II based on [13] and [14] and opinions on those lenses in combination with a Z5 would also be appreciated.

And for anybody wondering why I want to specifically use M lenses on a Z5 - I grew up in Germany and distinctly remember people walking around with Leicas taking pictures in town squares and there seemed to be something magical about it. I can't be bothered to acquire and use older Leica film cameras and I can't justify spending the money for a more recent digital Leica, so here we are.

Looking forward to y'all's thoughts.
