I have a d3400 and the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 DX VR AF-P lens. I mostly just take pics at my son's outdoor soccer games and it's fine. s it gets darker though I'm having trouble getting good shots of anyone in motion.

i know the traditional answer is to get a faster lens... but if I went to like a d7500 that can go higher iso at similar quality... wouldn't that help also?

I think the answer is to use higher shutter speed.

For school soccer play in daylight, the available light should not be too low, unless it was a night game under spot lights.

The ISO performance of you D3400 would be very similar to my D5600. I found ISO 5000 to 10,000 are very acceptable. Of course, it will depend on your expectations.

The following images were taken at very low and harsh stage light:

ISO 5000 is very acceptable,

ISO 9000 is still good

ISO 10000 is still usable.

I have gone as high as ISO 12800
