I don't know if I have a special R5. Last month I shot 3 days in Yellowstone and Grand Teton and took several thousand pictures. I never changed my battery during the day but did recharge the battery each night. At the end of each day my battery was not depleted. I did keep a spare in my pocket and extra in my camera bag. I don't do anything to preserve battery life while shooting.

How old is your camera?

I have had mine about 10 weeks and I think it uses a lot of power

I bought my R5 at the end of March.  I have not noticed a big difference between my 5DII and my R5. Maybe the R5 uses about 20% more. I have been on many photography trips since I bought the camera and I can remember only a few times I have changed the battery during the day.  When I do change the battery it is generally around 25% left.

I have three Canon R5 batteries.  I bought the 2 spare when Amazon had them available in May. I also have two Newer batteries I bought with the R5.  I have only used one of them since I bought the R5.

As I mentioned I don't do anything special to preserve the battery.  I have my EVF at high. I am not a big chimper, but I do review shots in the field.
