I don’t find this surprising; even assuming the light was exactly the same and there’s no sample variation at play, I think the assumption that the same sensor/processor in a different model produces exactly the same results has always been a bit flawed.

If you spend enough time trawling through test scenes here and elsewhere you’ll find that there are differences between cameras of the same generation.  They’re usually very subtle, but they are there.  I don’t think Fuji can resist making minor tweaks in the processing for each new model.  For a company famous for their colour science, they’re certainly not afraid to make sweeping changes between each new generation and I think that’s a more continuous improvement programme than people think.
