Question on Z fc with Viltrox 23mm 1.4

I purchased Viltrox 23mm f1.4 to go along with my Z fc for low light events.
Here is my dilemma: while using the Viltrox at out birthday dinner in our house for pictures I could only get on focus the person or child in the middle of the frame. Everything and everyone outside of the centre of the frame is blurry (in bokeh).

I get the idea of wide open and dreamy bokeh, but I want to get almost all the frame in focus.
I stopped down F to 2.8 and it got better, but not enough. I stooped further down to 3.5 but then I lose exposure and I'm at f3.5 which is the territory of the kit lens.

I was using AF-S and AF-A on the Z fc.

Is there a technique where I can use the bright and fast Viltrox at f2.2-f2.5 and get the entire frame in focus ?

Is there another AF mode I should use ?

Or another fast lens may be original Nikon lens around 20mm-25mm 1.4-1.8 that will do the trick ?
