Why did Nikon drop the machined alloy focus ring?

I really like the feel of the machined alloy focus ring on my Nikon Z 50mm f1.8 (All the 1.8 primes have this design). Rubbers tend to get loose over time, and suffer from white blemishes as they age, so I thought it was a pretty modern choice of Nikon.

I also thought that all Z lenses would carry this design, or at least the primes, but it seems going forward Nikon is choosing rubber. The 105mm has rubber, and I guess most of the zooms use rubber as well, certainly all the teles?

What do you prefer?
