Starting to scan old 35mm slides

I have just acquired a Plustek 135i scanner. The software that came with it is QuickScan. Looks like a basic scanner software. I have some questions, like, should I use auto exposure? Should I try to use QuickScan to try to improve the images, or move them directly to my Mac's Photos app, where I have editing access via other photo software. I also have tried scanning with VueScan and it seems like the images come out a bit sharper, other things being equal. But, it adds $100 to the price of scanning. Have other people used and/or tried either of these programs. I'm going to add one scan from QuickScan and one from VueScan. Seems like QuickScan is a bit softer than I expected.
