Yep. I set background flashes/strobes as manual (actually, for studio work, I lock down everything...WB, exposure, etc.).  Anyways, what are your strobes ? Everything that I know of in recent years will include an optical trigger. That way your strobes are triggered when you speedlites fire.

This is a neat trick for another, unrelated reason.  Most speedlites have a Multi option that allows them to pulse at a configurable rate producing a stroboscopic effect. Set your strobes for an optical trigger, and they can produce a dramatic result.
