Stop MacOS dropping turds?

Sorry to call them turds, but that's what they seem to me.

When browsing an SD card with MacOS, files that I've opened get a corresponding ._{name} file created, so when I put the SD card back in my camera, the camera cannot read it.

For example, I open DSCF1590.JPG and ._DSCF1590.JPG gets written to the SD card. The file(1) utility says it is "AppleDouble encoded Macintosh file." It contains mostly ^@ chars.

Is there any drawback to running this command? Will this stop them permanently?

defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true

(I'm not sure that works also with mounted filesystems.)
