Question regarding Image Stabilization

Hi everyone,

This is my first post, hope you can help. Just received a Canon EOS R. Pretty impressed so far. I’ve been using a 5D MKII for about 18 years, so this has some amazing features compared to my old friend.

My question is this - on both of my image stabilized lenses (24-105 and 100 macro), I can hear the stabilizer running constantly. If I go into the menu, they turn off, but when I return to shooting they come back on again. I can set the camera down for awhile, but they never turn off.

If I put the same lenses on my 5D MKII, when I depress the shutter button halfway, the image stabilizers fire up, but stop after about five seconds if there is no other activity. I have tried enabling/disabling various menu items (silent shutter, single shot vs. servo,  etc.) to no avail.

I am assuming this isn’t normal behavior, is it? Am I missing something? I’m guessing that having the stabilizers running constantly will wear them out prematurely.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
