Highlights and their Contrast

We talk about image highlights a lot in this Forum.

Looking at DPR's Dynamic Range review page(s) can tell us a lot about that!

For example, the DP2 :

look at the conversion from scene relative luminance to sRGB above. Observe the curvature in every ISO but 50 above an image value of about 208.

Remember that the steeper the slope, the more the contrast in terms of sRGB luminosity.

Now consider shooting a cloudscape ETTR in 50 ISO versus 100 ISO. In 50 ISO the slope and therefore the image contrast is constant (the same as in the midtones) all the way up to 255.

However, in 100 ISO starting at about 208, the slope and therefore the image contrast lessens with increasing scene luminance! That tells me that 50 ISO will give better-looking clouds ...

... any comments?
