I have the Canon G1X 3. Love it, but to say phones will never reach that lofty goal. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I would bet that's going to happen. Today's phone tech is just a glimpse of the future. I personally can't wait

Smart phone tech has limits, physically, and physics.

Smartphone lenses and sensors will never be large.

Even with theoretical non-limits of infinite readout and processing speeds (if/when that is achieved), desired exposure becomes the theoretical limit. Exposures requiring more light and thus forced slower readout, think indoors, after dark, fast readout becomes meaningless. Likewise, even supersampling tech for reach, has limits of what can be resolved and estimated/calculated. The latter is still evolving btw.

All to say traditional interchangeable offerings will always win where light is starved, or reach isn’t possible. Otherwise? Yes, smartphones are already doing the job, and doing it at equitable levels to high end point and shoots now.

Indeed. My 108mp 1" smartphone 25mm lens sure does improve on a Ricoh GR3

1/1.33" and effectively 27Mp: https://www.smartprix.com/bytes/best-108mp-camera-phones/

Effectively much better IQ due to effective 108mp resolution in PRO option
