I would suggest that there may be a fault with the lens, and you need to swap it for another one and compare.

Of course, if you bought it from an internet source, and have no access to another lens, I can see that would be a problem. But you could try going into Best Buy, or a similar common and impersonal big box store, with your camera and trying out some of their lenses to see how they react. The 24-240 lens comes out further than the 35mm.

I actually did purchase both the camera and lens from Best Buy, so this shouldn't be a problem.

I just find it odd because the lens retracts normally in every other situation except for the one specific one I ran into which made me think it was just a firmware problem.

But to confirm, you were in servo mode (I was also in eye af, but I don't think it makes a difference), half shutter focus and lock on something close (blue square), then turn off the camera.
