Hello,
Recently I have been seriously considering buying the EOS R as an upgrade from my 7D Mark ii. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to truly understanding the different specs. From what I can understand the EOS R is a good bit better than the 7D Mark ii I have and use. So I'm here looking for advice.
Situation-
I recently started my side photography business. I am most likely going to do primarily portraits (Senior Pictures and Families) along with some product photography (friends with small businesses of there own). I also love just doing landscape and street photography as purely a hobby. Business isn't booming by any means but my full time job allows me to have a little extra cash for nicer gear if I can decide if it is worth upgrading.
Two of the main features, besides the better Mega Pixel count, that really draws me to the EOS R is the tilting screen and the fact that with a mirrorless I can pretty much see how the picture will look before I take the picture.
Another concern is that I already have a few EF lens. They are a mix of Canon and Tamron. I believe from what I've already read that the Tamron lens will work with the adaptor.
I know the R5 and R6 are out there but unless I really start to ramp up the business, I can't see any reason to make that price jump.
Any help I can get with my personal dilemma would be greatly appreciated and thank you for your time in advance!
When I bought my R (on sale refurbished) last year I sold my 7DII. But the R wasn't really an upgrade from the 7DII for me, because I had already pretty much replaced my 7DII with my M6II, which does almost everything better than the 7DII. The M6II handles sports better than the 7DII (which was no slouch itself in that regard), and is better for portraits, landscapes, street shooting, etc. The main advantages of the 7DII over the M6II are ergonomic, battery life, and viewfinder shooting. I find the R to be better than the 7DII in just about every respect, except battery life and framerate. It sounds like you don't really need the 10fps of the 7DII (if you do, you should definitely look at the M6II). For pretty much everything you listed, the R will be a significant upgrade. I actually find the EVF on the R to be preferable to the OVF on the 7DII, but that might be a personal thing. The R is very customizable, just like the 7DII, fits well in my hand, but is enough smaller and lighter to be noticeable (in a good way, for me). The image quality is a significant step up, as you'd expect with a more recent 30MP full frame sensor compared with the 7DII's 20MP crop sensor (which is still very good for a crop sensor, but significantly behind the 32MP sensor in the M6II and 90D). The AF on the R (and on the M6II) is a delight to use, coming from the 7DII, which has really good AF for a crop DSLR. The eye detect alone is worth the upgrade, if you shoot a lot of people, and the coverage across the frame is amazing. The R5 is, of course, better still, but also a lot more expensive (more than 3 times as much as I paid for my R).
I never had an R but a 7DII since long and also the M6II and R5.
While the sensor of the M6II is better, it was absolutely not at the 7DII level for fast moving objects IMO.
The R5 has the advantage of both, so most probably the R will complement the 7DII nicely.
PS: my 7DII died this summer, and I won't let repair it, page turned
