Gouda clay pipe close-ups
1

Just a few more examples and some history.

During the 17th and 18th centuries Gouda was also known as a centre for clay pipe making. Around 1750 there were some 370 pipe makers who employed about 3500 workers, many of whom were women and children. That was almost half of the complete work force of the town.

We always say, if you dig a hole in Gouda you will find a clay pipe

Many of them have a maker's mark stamped into them. It's called a heel mark, or hielmerk in Dutch. They are all well documented and described by historians.

Here's a few examples:

Heel marks 'Angel' 'Crowned 96' and 'Fox'

Heel marks are about 5mm in diameter. This is my small collection of clay pipes:

Definitely not a macro image

This is how they are described in the books:

Thanks fo looking. Perhaps there are some historians among you. We are in semi lockdown again in NL so I have nothing better to do
