Best zoom lens in image quality

I judge image quality at two points for this kind of wide to short tele zoom lens, tele end wide open center sharpness for portrait, and short end F/8 corners sharpness for landscape. This lens gives best result at both points. Both reach excellent level.
There can be copy variance. My last copy was just ordinary, very good at tele end but not at wide end, especially at the corners. Just the same as other zoom lenses. The current one is excellent at both points. Can't imagine this kind of sharpness for a zoom lens. There is normally some compromise on either wide end or tele end. But not for this lens. Canon makes it a marvel.
The only not-so-good is the zoom ring. It's not very smooth. There is friction during zooming. This friction gives me a feeling like this is a pure mechanical friction, not damped for smooth hand feeling. But this is what modern lens means. Optically improved, ignore the art feeling of the tools. Can't complain much on that.
