Well, it's clearly not the end of vague, click-bait thread titles at DPR...
This is a gear forum; for effective purposes, expect no new PowerShots, except the gimmick pick cameras that share the PowerShot name. I’d call that the end.
That was not your title! And I think you know that full well.
This was a more emotional burst, outburst, then usual, yes.
FWIW my initial thoughts were:
End of WHAT?
- this forum?
- the world?
- RLight? is he terminally ill?
Ha!
I’m not suggesting PowerShots are defunct, not yet anyways, the models we have now will be supported in parts for a few years and have effectiveness for some time to come as well. But for a forum that largely revolves around new gear, there isn’t, and won’t be new releases. For me it was a lightbulb moment when I realized the clickbait folks doom and gloom event has finally arrived.
Now the title was meant to both draw a reaction, and is a form of expression for myself. I almost didn’t start this thread, but, sometimes I just do it anyways. Other times I hold my peace. Apologies my expression here offended you.
I'm not offended. I was simply surprised, and yes, a bit disappointed since I had read quite a few thoughtful posts from you in the past.
I’m trying to wrap my head around it myself and having others chime in helps.
This I completely understand.
Wish Canon could’ve done another crop sensor leaf-shutter offering with weather sealing though. I’m shedding a emotional tear over here if you will. There’s just a perfect storm of smart phone tech, Covid shortages, and Canon refusing to release things that compete with itself in addition to market conditions. The reality is what we got is it. Moving on or staying for a while is all we got.
Aside from your disgust at the thread,
Huh? No disgust fro me! I think what you are saying here is called projection... you are blaming someone for something you regret you did.
Not criticizing you, I've done it many times LOL.
do you have any constructive thoughts to add?
So much on my plate right now (insane work schedule, several articles/resources on this site, including a review of my G1X3, if I ever get to it...etc. etc) wish I could reply in depth, but here are a few quick thoughts, partly based on relationships I've had with industry folks, some going back over 20 years:
- this consumer imaging industry evolves at a snails pace and has long been its own worst enemy (blaming dumbphones for a 90% drop in shipments over the last 10 years won't solve that.)
- Canon, having the typical arrogance of the "big dog market leader," will be losing much of its lead, or worse, within the next few years. Sony has been making strong gains and Nikon will almost certainly have half a million orders for the Z9 alone by year's end (apparently an industry first, I hear Canon honchos are freaking out... as they should!) Note that I'm not saying that Nikon doesn't make mistakes. Abandoning the Nikon 1 system, to take just one example, was a huge blunder. Had they not, there is no doubt that they would have absolutely dominated the 1" sensor market.
I'd heard rumblings to that effect myself. Funny, seems it takes Nikon to do something to make Canon do something. Canon has painted itself into a corner here that they now need to unpainted themselves from, IMO. There's more to it than that. I considered starting a thread on the R forum regarding the Z9 and some of it's more interesting elements (no shutter, price and sensor politics), but figured I'd leave it alone for now. The short version is Nikon dropping the shutter solves a lot of problems for them with catching up with AF, IS and cost reduction as well as making a statement at the same time. The price makes the R3 look upside-down, as well as the A1, and means Canon either is outpaced in a war with the R1, or has to go well above and beyond here. Trouble is what would that be? Superpixel sensor with binning option? Dunno.
- Chinese entities will gobble up most of the current Japanese brands (in whole or as "sub-brands" like Lumix... up to 95% of the parts they use already come from China anyway) over the next 10 years.
You have a good point on this last element. I always forget about Southeast Asian politics, they are there own beast which is a larger animal than we're discussing here.
Its very telling when even Sony has only released a vlogging RX100 in recent events. And likewise, Canon updated the G7x III firmware, but that’s it. In Camera makers eyes, that’s all that’s left of the market appparently.
Give them another couple years. Their sales are barely rebounding after a catastrophic 2020.
