I'm looking for an inexpensive portrait lens with good low light performance for my A7RIV. I don't do a ton of portrait photography, so I'd like to keep it under $500. Would I be better off with a 35mm or 50mm? Is 1.4 going to make a dramatic difference in low light compared to 1.8? Thanks!

A few I was looking at:

Sony 35mm f/1.8
Samyang 35mm F1.8
Sony FE 50mm F1.8
Samyang 50mm F1.4
Rokinon 50mm F1.4

I ran FE55/1.8 for 2.5yrs as single lens portrait setup. Now I'm doing 35mm/85mm.

I only recommend starting with 35mm IF you're pairing it with a 50mm or 85mm down the road. They have better background compression than 35.

For a one lens portrait setup, I find 50mm very capable.

The best gear is the one you have at that moment.
