If he wants the best quality he should make sure his camera has a sharp lens with low distortion and a flat field. Most kit lenses will give disappointing results because they won't be sharp at the edge of the frame. If he is able to use a tripod he could use a slower lens stopped down, but if that isn't permitted he would need a faster, more expensive lens.

He should also give some thought to exposure. Automatic metering is not very good for accurately copying another picture. He could meter off the back of his hand, or a proper grey card, note the iris and shutter speed, and then manually set the camera to those settings to take the picture of the painting.


He is more interested in color rendition as far as i know and as a point he has quite a few his own paintings hanging in the museums.
