I like your idea of a "use case". I'm wanting to get into painting and thought this would take nice reference photos on the cheap as well as great captures of my family. I've had the expensive SLRs, DSLRs, lenses, etc. For me it all comes back to the composition and the exposure. The pictures I took at the Tour de France in 2003 with my Nikon D100 are still amazing even though that camera is completely obselete. Heck I even sold some copies of my "money shot" of Lance Armstrong back in the day.

Yeah, amazing how we managed to take good pictures before 45MP cameras with auto this and that. i've dug up old film shots and even stuff from total craptastic cheapo digitals from that era and made use of them. And I swear that the CCD shots from my Nikon D50 take particularly well to modern sharpening and upsizing tools like those from Topaz.

It's funny, but there is a whole movement of people, most skewing much younger than the druids at DPR, that love the "moved on from cameras." And look at the popularity of Instax and Polaroid. Sheesh, I was bidding for some old Ricoh GR and it was going through the roof; some of us just like old digital stuff. It really is a pleasure to work wth; enjoy!
